This week the purple carpet was rolled out at The Savoy in London for the most glamorous gala the takeaway industry has ever seen, the British Takeaway Awards. Hosted by actor and comedian Rob Brydon, awards were presented to 13 regional winners across the country as well as two new awards for the Best Takeaway Chef and Delivery Driver of the Year.
The star-studded event, which included appearances from Masterchef’s Gregg Wallace, TOWIE’s Ferne McCann, Jessica Wright and Lydia Bright, as well as S Club 7 singer Rachel Stevens, saw Chicken George, a family-run fried chicken shop in Luton, take home the most coveted trophy in the takeaway industry – Best Takeaway in Britain and £6,000 prize money in total.
Owned by Su Cheah, Chicken George impressed the judges – who included TV chef Ainsley Harriott and businesswoman and star of Dragon’s Den, Sarah Willingham – with their dedication to delivering fresh, exceptional food using local ingredients.
Chicken George are also a pillar within their local community. Supporting local sports teams, donating excess food to a homeless charity, and giving pensioners free chicken after their monthly bingo session is all in a day’s work for the hardworking staff. The judges also commended Chicken George’s investment into their business and in staff development, which saw 55% growth in 2016.
An incredible 110,000 customers voted in the BTAs and the finalists were judged on a mystery shopping experience, and provided a submission on why they deserved to win before the judging panel made their decisions.
