A little bit about us
If anyone ever tells you that one curry is as good as another, then they`ve never eaten at the Gulshan.
"That was the best chicken shashlik I`ve ever had!" my wife Lisa told me after our meal, & to be quite honest, my balti chicken pathia was pretty close to a perfect ten as well!
The Gulshan is one of those hidden gems of a restaurant, lurking in an out of the way spot down Southend`s Sutton Road, but that shouldn`t put you off making a special trip to sample their top notch Indian cuisine. Now available here on online!
Picking our way through a couple of poppadoms whilst musing over the menu was probably not a good idea, as we needed every inch of available stomach space for the feast ahead.
For starters Lisa opted for a sizzling seekh kebab-minced lamb grilled on charcoal & served with onions & salad- & described it as "Nicely spicy & very moreish!" I went for that old favourite, the onion bhaji-lightly spiced onion ball deep fried in ghee-& although I wasn`t disappointed, it was a bit dry & needed a lashing of mint sauce to help it slip down.
Moving onto the main course, I picked a Gulshan speciality balti, which is sort of where they throw everything into one pot, served with an unfeasibly large garlic naan.
From an extensive choice of balti dishes, I selected a medium hot pathia- very spicy, served in a thick sweet & sour sauce- & pinched some of Lisa`s pilau rice to complement it.
A perfect curry for the discerning dinner, this dish is full of flavour, not too hot to be stupid & was pretty much faultless.
Lisa selected a tandoori dish-chicken shashlik- boneless pieces of lightly spiced chicken barbecued on skewers with cooked capsicum, tomato & onion, complemented by green salad & lots of mint sauce.
"A very distinctive flavour, a bit like a tikka but more juicy than dry." She described it between mouthfuls, afterwards raving about how her quest to find the world`s finest shashlik could at last be over.
Unfortunately there was no room for dessert afterwards & we had to pass on the liqueur ice cream, real fruit sorbet & other temptations.
This was probably the only disappointment of the evening!
Impeccable service from start to finish further raises the Gulshan above the curry house norm & the whole meal (plus two drinks each!) was a staggeringly reasonable £25.70!
