Fancy Cake, but maybe something a bit more exotic? Think Just Eat app. Cakes or Desserts from the Middle East and Far East offer sumptuous alternatives to the best of the West. Baklava is a rich, sweet dessert pastry made from layer upon layer of filo crammed with chopped nuts bound with sticky syrup or honey. Turkish Delight (or Lokum) delights more that just Turkey – it gifts the whole world with (guilty) pleasure. Premium varieties consist of chopped dates or pistachios, gelled together and flavoured with rosewater, Bergamot orange, or lemon. Basbousa is a traditional sweet cake made from cooked semolina soaked in syrup with coconut. Halva is a densely sweet, crystallised paste of sesame seeds and sugar. Kanafeh is thin noodle-like pastry, soaked in sweet sugar-based syrup and often layered with cheese, clotted cream or nuts. You’d be nuts not to.

Q: Thinking Cake? A: Think Just Eat. And maybe think about a quintessentially English tea-time gathering of creme tea with friends and family, featuring Scones Jam and Cream. What about a Glazed Chelsea Bun studded with currents. Or Victoria Sponge, an absolute classic with fruity jam sandwiched between light, buttery sponge – with a layer of cream to be really naughty (and really nice). Lemon Drizzle Cake is packed with zest and drizzled with sugary syrup that seeps into the moist sponge. A Pineapple Upside-Down Cake is baked in a single pan with toppings at the bottom of the pan, hence ‘upside-down’. Then, allez-oop, remove it and it’s right side up again. Sweet. Or a Classic Swiss Roll, with jam and cream rolled up in a light, airy sponge. Or what about a slice of Treacle Tart, which dates back to English author Mary Jewry’s cookbook from the late 19th Century (the century was late, Just Eat won’t be).
